In response to requests from the Illinois Valley community, St. Margaret’s Hospital has added two female physicians to its obstetrics and gynecology service. JenniferMaschmann, MD, and Norah Orteza, MD, have joined St. Margaret’s Hospital and Women’s Health Center in August, 2003.
“We’ve restructured our women’s services to provide more care here on our main campus and more continuity of care,” stated Tim Muntz, president / CEO of St. Margaret’s Hospital. “The change will boost the availability of prenatal and gynecological care and free up more time for scheduled appointments,” he added.
The hirings will raise the OB/GYN physician complement to three: Craig Whatcott, MD, Jennifer Maschmann, MD and Norah Orteza, MD. The service also includes certified nurse midwife Cathy Christensen.
An Illinois Valley native, Dr. Orteza graduated from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1995, with a degree in Bioengineering. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1999, she completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO, in 2003. Dr. Orteza is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She and her husband, Joseph, are both graduates of St. Bede Academy, and have one daughter, Claudia Rose.
Dr. Maschmann graduated from Truman State University in Kirksville, MO, with a bachelor's degree in Biology in 1995, and went on to earn her medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, in 1999. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO, in 2003. Dr. Maschmann is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The oldest of eight children, she is originally from Bolingbrook, IL, and attended Joliet Catholic Academy. She and her husband, Scott, are parents of a one-year-old son, Sam.
To accommodate this exciting growth, St. Margaret’s Women’s Health Center has relocated to the second floor of St. Margaret’s Medical Clinic building. Outpatient Rehab Services, which was located there, has moved temporarily to the first floor in the area formerly occupied by the first floor nursing unit.
“Those who use the Women’s Health Center are of all different ages and come from all over our community,” Muntz added. “We are looking forward to expanding our services and offering women in our community a choice in their health care.”
