Forty bottles, three cribs, three basinets, three car seats, three swings, two nurseries and 1,500 diapers - that's what the Knickerbockers had waiting for them on Thursday, September 16, as they brought their newborn fraternal triplets to their Princeton home.
"It was prayers that got us here," Julie Knickerbocker, a nurse, said of her babies, Joseph Xavier, Isaac Thomas and Jacob Tyler. The couple now plans to take "one day at a time" with "lots of organization and planning" and help from a wonderful, supportive family.
Julie and Erick Knickerbocker first found out they were having triplets in February, only seven weeks into the pregnancy. Julie was on bedrest for the last 15 1/2 weeks of her pregnancy, and delivered at 35 1/2 weeks. Otherwise, she called her first pregnancy "uneventful."
"We've been calling them our 'miracle babies' since we first found out we were pregnant," Erick said. "We never imagined that we would be able to take our babies home after only three or four days in the hospital." Julie's stepsons, Christian (11) and Brandon (7), who also live with the couple, are anxious to help out with their new brothers. With five boys now, Erick can't help thinking that a girl would be nice, but then he and Julie are quick to add that five children is probably enough!
The couple was very generous in their praise of Craig Whatcott, MD, OB/GYN, who delivered the triplets. "Dr. Whatcott was wonderful," Julie said. "And he was just as excited as we were!" To which Erick added, "If not more!"
