  St. Margaret's Hospital and the American Heart Association will offer a CPR class on the above dates from 6-8:30pm, in the First Floor Presentation Room. The Friends & Family course is an adult and infant community CPR course and does not meet CPR certification requirements of employment or required professional credentials. The class cost is $20. • Healthcare Provider: Jan. 3, April 4, May 2, July 11, August 1, Oct. 3, Nov. 7
The class is for any health care provider, including lifeguards, firefighters and health care workers. The class cost is $40, which includes the instructional book, and is conducted by American Heart Association instructors. It will be held in the hospital’s First Floor Presentation Room from 6-10pm. • Heartsaver: March 7, June 6, Dec. 5
The class is designed for lay responders who are serving as rescuers as part of their job responsibilities and are not required to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This could include police, firefighters, lifeguards, daycare employees, flight attendants, security personnel and any other lay rescuers and those who may have to respond in an emergency.The class is from 6-8:30pm and the cost is $35. There is also the option to add the First Aid class for an additional $35. The total cost for both classes would be $65 (November 11). Pre-registration is required. The joint class is held every first and third Wednesday of the month in St. Margaret's Presentation Room (side ac, unless indicated otherwise). The 2016 dates are as follows: January 4 & 18; February 1 & 15; March 1 & 15; April 5 & 19; May 3 & 17; June 7 & 21; July 5 & 19; August 2 & 16; September 6 & 20; October 4 & 18; November 1 & 15; and December 6th.

A Free Diabetes Education Class will be held at St. Margaret’s Hospital on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 3-4 p.m. The class will cover an overview of diabetes, complications and monitoring, nutrition and diet, medications, stress management and social assistance, exercise and activity, and foot, skin and oral care. St. Margaret’s Prenatal/Lamaze classes for expectant mothers, called "1-2-3-4 What To Expect From Labor/Delivery and More," will be held on Monday evenings (for four weeks) on odd months from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the First Floor Presentation Room at St. Margaret’s Hospital.

The four-week series of classes will consist of lectures on all aspects of pregnancy, including: stages of labor and delivery, techniques for pain relief, caesarian sections, medical interventions, Lamaze breathing techniques, conditioning and relaxation exercises, newborn care, breast and bottle-feeding and infant CPR. Films on childbirth, car seat safety, infant care and infant safety are shown, and a tour of St. Margaret’s Family Birthing Centre is provided.

Participants are asked to bring a blanket, two pillows, and a labor coach (support person). Expectant fathers are welcome and encouraged to attend.

• Sibling Classes

St. Margaret’s will hold a Mom’s Special Helper Sibling Class for soon-to-be big brothers and sisters on the first Saturday of even months at 10 a.m. in room 309 on the third floor of the Hospital. The class will be conducted through the use of a video, demonstrations, and storybook readings. A tour of the Family Birthing Centre will be provided, and participants will receive refreshments, certificates, a gift bag and souvenir handouts. Parents are encouraged to sign up their 3-11 year olds for this free class.

There will be a Food Service Sanitation Manager Course offered at St. Margaret’s Hospital on Monday, July 18th in the hospital’s first floor Presentation Room. This is a State approved 15-hour course for the Illinois Food Service Safety Manager Certification. All food service facilities are required to have certified managers. St. Margaret’s Health “Teens Need Teens” Peer Support Grief Group will be held on the 4th Thursday of every month (September 2016 through May 2017), from 6-7 p.m. in the hospital’s 1st Floor Presentation Room.

It is a free program coordinated by a trained, licensed clinical social worker to help the teen put their feelings into words, work through their grief, build a stronger sense of self esteem, and begin to accept what has taken place in the family. If your child is struggling through a painful loss experience, this will be an opportunity for them to share within a confidential, small group of peers what they are experiencing together.

The Children's Grief Group is a children’s support group through life’s difficult changes of death, divorce and loss. Meetings will be held on the second Thursday of each month (September 2016 through May 2017) from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Hospital’s First Floor Presentation Room. Program Helps Women Overcome Effects of Cancer Treatment

The Look Good…Feel Better® program will be offered to residents of the Illinois Valley at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley on Thurs., Apr. 20 and Wed., Oct. 11th from 1-3pm. This free program is a joint effort between the American Cancer Society, the National Cosmetology Association, and the Personal Care Products Council Foundation that teaches beauty techniques to women who are actively undergoing cancer treatment to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. The session is free, but registration is requested to ensure the proper make-up kit and materials are available for each participant. "Look Good…Feel Better® is as much about improving and maintaining self-image and confidence as it is about appearance," says Nicole Killion, Patient Services Representative with the American Cancer Society. "Patients enjoy the opportunity to spend time in a relaxed, non-medical setting with others in the same situation. And the free make-up and instruction from professionals helps them look and feel better."

According to the American Cancer Society, there are dozens of anti-cancer drugs in use today, each with its own set of possible side effects. Possible appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation include: hair loss on the scalp, eyebrows or lashes; weight gain or loss; changes in skin pigmentation and texture; skin oiliness, itchiness or peeling; and alterations in nail texture and growth rate.

St. Margaret’s Grief Support Group will meet on the third Thursday of every month, from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Hospital in the First Floor Presentation Room. For those wanting information regarding congestive heart failure, or any other heart-related issues. The goal of Cardiac Chat is for individuals to learn the skills that help manage their condition and improve their quality of life. Family members are encouraged to also attend and bring questions.

Attend for the whole hour or just stop in during the scheduled time. Staff members from various departments in the hospital will be on hand monthly to answer various questions:

• Durable Medical Equipment – questions about medical equipment, oxygen
